Gateshead selective licensing phase 1 applies in eight listed LSOAs from 1 June 2025 to 31 May 2030.
The scheme is scoped to small statistical areas (LSOAs) from the Office for National Statistics. Each LSOA is a few hundred households, and the boundaries do not follow street names, so two neighbouring streets can fall on different sides.
Paid in two parts: £510 on application (Part A) and £340 once the decision is made to grant the licence (Part B).
Properties exempt from this scheme
- Properties with a mandatory HMO licence are exempt.
- There are certain circumstances where some types of tenancy are exempt from licensing.
- Temporary exemption notices may be granted for three months, with a maximum six month exemption period.
Discounts the council offers
- £75 off Part B for landlords accredited by or members of specified schemes.
- £75 early bird discount for applications within the three months before the scheme start date.
- £10 multi-property discount for the second and subsequent properties where multiple applications are made at the same time by the same person.
A landlord who qualifies for the strongest energy and accreditation discounts on this scheme pays around £775 instead of the headline £850 fee, a saving of £75.
